Let Technology Work Smarter, Not Harder For You
"Work smarter, not harder!" Does this phrase sound familiar? I find myself saying it a lot, and if I am being honest, I think it's because I put a high value on my time, as many do. I have a deep desire to focus on the "important," so when I perform duties that are inefficient or feel like a waste of time, personally, I get frustrated.
I bring this up because I think, across the board, most people would agree to "work smarter, not harder" is the more preferable course of action. So why don't we? A big area I see and hear people stumble to work smarter is with technology. People struggle to streamline or leverage technology to make their lives easier. Using ourselves as an example: We purchase software to solve a problem, but as new needs arise, instead of evaluating if the first software is still the best, we buy a second software because the first one doesn't do everything. As our organizations change, our tech needs to change as well!
Being HR consultants, I can't stress enough how helpful HR Systems can be to make our lives easier in the long run. But if implemented poorly or at the wrong time, these systems will make us work harder. My hope is that we all continue to look at the bigger picture of what we do and why. Then be willing to change it even if it initially feels like it takes more time. Embrace technology, embrace new processes, and most of all embrace CHANGE. The next time you go to purchase new software or run into a need, stop and take the time to evaluate if now is a good time to rework your tech to make it work smarter for you.
