The Work Can Wait…Can You?
I recently read an article in FORBES that reminded me of the importance of taking vacation, both personally and professionally. “Time off from work is integral to well-being, sustained productivity and high performance.” During the last two years many of us have learned how to work from anywhere— especially people that can work from only a computer, screen, or phone! The newfound ability to work from anywhere can be a blessing and a curse. Enter the curse… I do not unplug enough anymore. It is a result of the convenience of working from home, owning my own business, and falling in the category the article describes as “American workers…notorious for being workaholics.”
This year I am vowing to take more vacation than I have in recent years. The work can wait. That's it. The work can wait. The idea that your work will still be there when you get back is scary and hard. It is uncomfortable thinking about what others will think if you are unavailable for a week. But turn the situation around. Wouldn’t you have patience for the workaholic in your office to take some much-deserved time off? Why can't you expect that same for yourself? Take some vacation, truly unplug and come back to work refreshed, clear-minded and ready to go. Because after all the work can wait…can you?
